What is the correct length for a keel protector?

I have a 2004 Cougar that I want to put an after market keel protector on. I am gettting different answers on the length, some say 7 and some say 8. What size is correct?

Thanks. BTW, I bought my first Bass Cat, a 92 Pantera II, at Greenes.
