getiing ready to get my 05 merc 225 proxs service..lower unit impellar plugs….what else do i need to make sure gets done??..been running quikleen since i got it and have burned bout 60 gallons of fuel..dont know if it was run in it before i bought it…just wanna get the works done since its a new to me boat..any tips suggestions i greatly apprciate it..Thanks!!

We would not worry about the plugs if the fuel GPH is good and it runs fine. Though the impeller and the gear lube we would do.

Impeller & lube should not be over $100.00, or at least my guy does not charge over that.

Fuel filter!!!! Ive seen it cost up to 600 smackers if you need plugs. The bottom plugs on an Opti can be a bear and they are not cheap. There is also a compressor filter that is recommended to be changed but Ive been told it rarely does on fresh water boats. Mine will get changed every couple of years. Ive always been a right by the book person on routine maint.

Just had my lower unit serviced and new impellor installed in March 2009–$141 including tax on a 250 Pro XS…

I was going to guess about $150 myself… As far as plug replacement, I have not noticed an issue on the Optis, but if it is caused by the crap running all over the motor (fuel lines, etc) I would likely remove the bottom “bucket” part of the cowl. For a while I ran 12 plug heads (land and sea) on my XR6, and getting to the lower plugs was tight. I just spent about 15 minutes to take the bottom cowl off (two clamshell pieces) rather than fighting (and occasionally breaking the insulator) on the bottom plugs. Ive changed them with little cursing needed on an Opti, but the right set of sockets and extensions and u-joints makes it a little easier. Work on enough Japanese (and American) cars under 10 years old and the Opti plugs seem easy. Try the back plugs on a Ford Excursion2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
