Well Im pretty sure I blew the power head on my motor 200EFI. Im not sure if I wanna go ahead and buy a new motor and have the warrantywith a new motor or buy a used cat with no motor warranty. I have a 94 PII and I just love it. It was running a strong 70+ until I lost RPMS in the last tourney, it would only turn up 4900 to 5000 replaced the plugs and was giving it a test run and heard a loud boom and it shut down. Its in excellent condition.
Try an engine or powerhead from either a local outlet or ScreamandFlu.comBCB
been there…mine let go on labor day weekend. I found a local buyer for my boat and trailer. I will be looking to move into another boat as soon as the right deal comes along. screamandfly.com is a good place to look for used/rebuilt powerheads although alot of what comes up over there are hot rod motors. If you pay the membership you could post up a wanted add. I would also give bassboatcentral a shot. I was considering a powerhead replacement with mine also and got alot of response from an add on bbc. one guy that came and looked at my boat had a 2001 yamaha that was supposed to be in good shape that he had on a boat with a bad transom. He was looking to sell the motor or put it on a good boat. I could try and find his number if you think you would be interested in going that route. He was located in missouri.
First off Maineman thats SUCKS…..If a guy wants to Upgrade and Fix your 2.5 like BCB said Id go to Screamandfly.com and look at the vendors that modify and fix broken 2.5s and their are many. Id recommend talking to Jay Smith in Texas 281-576-5088 he is The Master and can make your motor better than new, Id recommend him fixing it and maybe have the motor repaired so it produces more low end torque and a more power up top, these things are known to produce ungodly HP, upwards of 300!!! However to spend that kind of money a guy can find a very nice Used 200 EFI 3liter Mercury/Mariner and have the factory correct HP and Torque, and as BCB will tell you the 3liter of any brand will Rock on the Pantera….Also, with your amount of investment I would not rule out finding a nice clean used Yamaha OX66 3.1liter V6 or a OMC 3liter carbed motor, the Yammy and OMC are very reliable, granted your control box would need replacement yet thats a small thing. Mercury has factory Powerhead or about $5000 with Mercury Warranty……If you need any help or advice let me know…..Brannon
Andy did that happen at Big Lake? Wow that sucks!!!
Ya it did happen on big laake forn the most part. It was only turning up to 4900 wot brought it home tried new plugs put in and made it about 2 m iles from the landing on Gardners the day before Boydens. $15,999 quote for an etec 5 yr warranty, $13700 for a Merc ProXS 3 yr warranty both 200hp. Thats a pretty good start on another rig.
I blew the motor on my 1993 Javelin and just bought a used PIV. I got my loan through reclending.com and they added a manufacturers style warranty for $2000. It does have a $100 deductable, but thats a heck of a lot cheaper than a new powerhead. You dont even have to get a loan through them, you can buy the warranty alone.- Chaz
Andy go to BBC and talk to European marine (Don Weed) he is the Mercury board moderator and a super knowledgeable guy (also a Mercury Master tech). He can get you a great price on a power head that would be a lot cheaper with a Mercury warranty. Then take it to a local Mercury dealer to install. I bet you could do it for $5000.
The options presented will get you there in the most reasonable costs for your situation. You can go from a new power head, to a used economy engine. We know that dropping $5k can be hard on some of us and we would have trouble in most cases doing that ourselves. Though selling you engine and going to another used one,or a do it your self bolt up reasonably is your other option. You can go used engine from Scream and Fly also if you prefer. Then some local dealers will swap yours for a used engine also. Take your pick!

When they sell you the warranty they make it sound really good but when you then when something breaks you are not as covered as you might think. You need to read through your policy very carefully and make sure that you are covered as well as you think you are. If you arent satisfied you can cancel it and get money back for the remaining time that you have on it.
