I have a tear in the drivers seat and a spot on top of the passenger seat where the stitching has come undone. Both spots are 2-3″ long. Is there anything good to do or put on these spots to keep them from getting worse?
Year model?
09 Puma FTD
Are you the original owner? If not then what was used on the seat is unknown and many products age the stitching.
I’m the 3rd owner. I’ve put a conditioner on it before, just a couple times think it was a 3m product. Seats were fine when I got the boat a few years ago and other than these spots look good. The tear is probly my fault and a co angler could have hooked the stitching with a crank bait for all I know. I’m not laying blame, just wondering if anyone has had any luck with a glue/tape/? to keep them from getting worse. Boat gets heavy use.
Heavy use is good! A 2009 is alright vinyl, though not where the vinyl is today. Its into the recession period and people were cutting corners to survive. Thus the vinyl went backwards in that era. Todays Syntec vinyl, around 2013 and later, is extremely good and has more ter resistance in the standard non patterned vinyls. The patterned vinyl is pretty, though lacks in durability. If you have used a treatment then we find other Owners before probably have also and usually those degrade the stitching. We would suggest do the best you can to get it to last, then replace them down the road. Then your use pattern and care should be soap, water, scrubbing bubbles and some old fashioned lemon Pledge on occasion.
I have an 2007 Classic and had/have a small tear in the seam on the driver side seat bottom. I went to the craft store and got a some heavy duty sewing needles both straight and hooked along with heavy duty thread. The hooked needles seem to work better. I sowed the vinyl back together the best I could. Not real pretty (Im not much of a seamstress)but it has held up 4-5 years now. I did take the seat out to making working on it easier over the winter. I had inquired about new seat bottom but the price was quite high so I did a little sewing instead. If you are a fanatic about the look, it might not work for you unless you know what you are doing (I didnt). Another option is finding a local shop that specializes in vinyl (auto or boat) and they could do a much better job sewing/pulling material back together so it looks almost like new. Good luck!

Good luck!I did the same thing with my 06 Puma except I used braided line. Mine was not perfect either but was a lot cheaper than replacing or having it tear more, Once I was finished sewing, I covered it with ShoeGoo ( got at Wally World). Have had some heavy weights sitting in the seat and it has held up for the last 3 years.
A good auto upholstery place should be able to fix any kind of seam issue. A tear in the vinyl itself is a different ballgame, though Im sure they would be able to do something to keep it from getting worse.
