Im looking for advice on a situation. I purchased a new 2011 PII back in April. The dealer rigged the boat with an Interstate battery with only 800 CCA. I have a PRO XS 200. And, the last 2 times out, with the temps in the low 30s, the battery will not start. I always keep the batteries charged. And, I also maintain the water level in the batteries with distilled water. I called BCB customer service, which is the best in the business. And, they told me the boat needs a minimum of 1000 CCAs for my engine, for the PRO XS. I relayed this information to my dealer. And, the comment was, “we always rig this boat with 800 CCA batteries”. Who is right in this situation? I really dont want to pay for another battery due to the wrong one being installed. Suggestions???Thanks!Richey
Ill tell you who is right in this situation…You are.Cliches aside- cant imagine having one with less than 1000.C.O.D. Jr. III
Obviously some dealers are going to “RIG” a boat as cost affective as possible, so if you want something “bigger” or “better” it will more than likely fall on you. The 800 CCA (1000 MCA) is the bare minimum for that engine see http://www.bbcboards.net/zerothread?id= … is-just-inNow when you factor in ADDITIONAL electronics, lights, or even pumps you are below minimum required Amperage. I am sure BCB will follow up and I would wait to hear from them.
Uh yeah, 800 aint gonna do it. Chalk it up to a learning experience I guess for your next boat. Optis need those CCAa so get the biggest one you can find.
BCB has been on record many times suggesting the largest cranking battery tolerable. We dont have a CCA, though we suggest a 27 Series AGM battery if your willing to spend the money and we frequently find that the smaller 24 base models will not suffice. Actually Mercury also suggests a 1000 cca battery.
I am in a similar position as Richey with my 11 PII. I am starting to see a little weakness in cooler weather with 800 amps. My bigger concern is does the 800 CCA battery impact the warranty on the 200 Opti? If this impacts the warranty in any possible way, I feel this should be dealer liability. I dont know about others, but when I make a major purchase it is done with the assumption the equipment that comes with the purchase is adequate for the manufacturers warrantly.
I would suggest you call the local Interstate battery dealership in the area and speak with them about your situation. I bet they will help you out, and if not swap out at least give you a deal on the proper battery. You should advise them of the dealership installing the group 24s in big boats, they dont want unhappy customers either !
cef lets look at it this way…They installed battery.Lets say some amperage gremlin occurs and your motor craters. (Remember I own an evinrude so I am good at this)Merc asks dealer- “hey what battery is in that thing”Dealer says- “800cca”Merc- “See ya!(although doubtful)”Dealer to you- “Dude we @$@#d up”No leg to stand on for dealer. You either call you dealership and express your concerns nicely “Hey I was reading my warranty and blah blah came up. What do you think?”Or you spend $115 and get a non agm group 29-31 and move on.Like D said above I think if you call your dealer, find out where they get batteries, see if you can get an exchange the entire process is not a big hicky. At least not the kinda hicky NELACATs post on LSU-Bama thread is gonna leave….C.O.D. We always rig our new cats with the severe duty group 27 Deka or interstate with lots of reserve capacity. Seems to handle the engine and big electronics very well

Ran two HDS units and livewells on manual and never had a problem. Not once!
