I need some help on figuring out a newly developed problem….I have a 2010 Puma/250 SHO. When cranking the SHO, my 998 on the bow turns off and sometimes the 998 on the dash turns off. Im sure it is from low voltage as the motor is cranked, I had 850 cranking amp battery, and replaced it with a 1000 cranking amp battery, with the same results. I checked the voltage on the hummingbirds at their plugs with 2 different volt meters and both were 12.6 volts, but when I put the plug back into the units and turn them on they both show 11.1 volts. Any suggestions?

suggest that your supply lines are too small. You need a direct ground wire from the HB to the battery (-) terminal. Any starting system will put transients on the power line when cranking the motor. A low voltage spike shutting off electronics is not unexpected. You should power down sensitive electronics when starting your motor.jwt

I experienced that when I had a 200 and 250 SHO. I had to get a larger Cranking battery to fix that issue.

A 31 series battery will definitely help, though we dont know what you have now.

Wire your graphs direct to PM31 diehard or equivalent starting battery and you will not have to worry about it anymore. See the post titled 2005 Puma / Humminbird on page 2, this same subject gets thrashed out every couple months, I am sure there are other remedies, but wiring direct is a sure fix.

Im the guy with the 05 Puma with the Humminbird power issues. My units would shut off when I cranked the motor and would be very erratic from that point on, low voltage readings etc…My fix was to upgrade to the same battery mentioned in this thread and run 12 gauge wire directly from the cranking battery to my units. Problem solved, no more low voltage readings or shut offs.You may just need a little more CCA and/or direct wiring. I believe the DieHard is 1150 CCA.
