Can you explain at what point or points that you should have minimal steering torque? I experience considerable steering torque until I am able to start the trim process from take off until well into plane. I do get to the point of little torque as soon as I plane and I am able to trim probably about 1/4 trim to 1/2 and up. I am interested in knowing if the steering torque on takeoff and through the planing process is normal or if I should adjust my jackplate. 2008 Cougar with the 250 Pro Xs Thanks
The steering torque terminology is usually applied in discussion concerning top end speeds. Generally there is no torque at idle, then torque at lower speeds (2000-3000 rpms), and then some torque at wide open. However, trim amount can directly affect the amount of steering torque and not necessarily the height of the jack plate. I wouldnt worry too much about steering torque other than at wide open. Get to know your boat, learn how to drive, etc. etc. before you start messing with jack plate heights.
Thanks Phil. I am trying to figure out my hole shot…Top end is great, not sure if my hole shot could improve from a prop change, jack plate height or plug removal. I have removed 2 plugs but not noticed a great change. I am expecting a better hole shot on this boat with this motor but maybe I am over expecting. No BCB dealer in my area at all so I am having to rely on the summer of driving it and some seat time in other bass boats. I do know that with a hydraulic jack plate I was able to work the plate some on takeoff and improve the hole shot while also triming slightly with that other boat. I dont have that advantage on this boat with the mechanical jack plate…. I guess you just have to call it intuition but in my honest opinion this boat has a better take off in it I just lack the knowledge to know exactly which way to go on it to improve it….I read that prop choice seems correct but I will continue to work my way through this to see if I can stumble onto a package that works. Thanks for the help I will keep trying….
Remove all the plugs and if you are still lugging out of the hole youll need to change props. If the engine overrevs after removing all the plugs then install one at a time until it goes away.
Any suggestions on the jack plae. It was even where it curves down and meets the base, I lowered it 1/4 inch saw no real noticable difference. Would you move it back up then pop the other 2 plugs out and try that or just try it the way it is for now? Thanks again…nice to have a sounding board when you are playing with this stuff
Raise jack plate to where it was originally set.
Phil, Looking for some final input….Last night raised the plate to the exact location it was at from the factory. Pulled out the remaining 2 PVS plugs….3 Adult men about 600lbs combined and regular gear, livewells empty but went to take off and it would blow out at 4000 rpm….I tried to feather it easy into plane and every time it reached 4000 rpm before it would plane it would blow out…. Idled to a fishing hole and was able to push the 2 plugs back in. Took a test run and all was great except it still has a nose up slow plane. Not huge but not a jump out of the hole either…..I am thinking at this point for hole shot my only choice is going to be something like the 5 high? Any input and enough information? Thanks again…
The plugs are not as simple as pull two or put two in. You will need to tweak the set up by changing sizes, trying one out instead of two and etc. BCB
I understand. I should have been clearer, I can sense the motor with these 2 in on the edge of blowing out. I could try one out and one in and also try size changes and will but I can tell by sound that with those 2 back in it was still on the verge….I will try some combos and see if it improves with one in and one more out or maybe some size changes for the both of them jsut a bit smaller. They appear to be the largest size right now..
On the verge is where you want it…keep the throttle pinned and if it revs up for just a second or two and catches that is about perfect in the way I want to have mine set up. Judd Lasiter
