Windshields loose…

Four or five screws on each of my windshields are loose. After taking them out a few times for cleaning then for the wrap plus rough water just loosened things up quite a bit and some of the inserts cracked or got lost. Replacement hardware on the way but wondering what a good fix would be to get them tight again. I was thinking of putting thick wood shims on the inside and screwing into those, bolts from the inside, etc. Any other thoughts or ideas?

Use epoxy or marine tex to fill the holes and redrill. Do not overtighten the screws with a battery powered screw driver and youll prevent this in the future.

We suggest a hand screwdriver, though most use a drill driver. The drill drivers often slip the screws some and they loosen in time. You can put a bit of 24 hour epoxy in there or use fiberglass resin to tighten the hole. You can wax the screw and put resin in there and leave the screw thourhg a piece of masking tape sealing the hole. This will leave cast threads for the future. BCB

I cut peaces of aluminum flat plate 1×1 predrilled holes and used them as backing with my factory screws they are holding up great plus you can tighten down on them pretty good and not worry about stripping them out like you do with just fiberglass.

Another trick to help save this from happening is..When you reinstall a screw into the hole turn it backwards until you feel it drop into the original threads..Then turn it in..That puts it back into the same thread as before and helps prevent cutting new threads which in turn strips the hole out after a couple of times….Sherm

I like the 1×1 aluminum strip backing idea, for a little additional strength. Seems some of my passengers like to use the windshields as a handrail when stepping up or down from the front deck!

I used plastic anchors from the hardware store on my 08 Puma. I drilled out the screw holes to fit the anchors and glued them in with 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant. Have had no problems since. Eugene
