Winterizing for travel of delivery?

Howdy Folks, Just a quick question. I will be delivering my boat to a new owner in Montana he asked about winterizing it. I guess it is already getting into the 30s there. My question is do I need to winterize the boat before I deliver it as I will be driving through that temperature on the way there? I have never had to do that to a boat living in Arizona, so I have no idea. He also asked what are the typical costs associated with winterizing a boat. Any help would be appreciated. I would think I could deliver it and he could winterize it there with the dealer located in Montana, but we are not sure if just the drive through those temps will cause issues. Other than leaving it trimmed down and draining all the water, only fogging the cylinders is winterizing on an outboard. Put some fuel retainer in the tank, and let er rip! BCB

Having lived in Northern MN for 8years there are a few more items to do. Get a couple gallons of pink RV anitifreeze and circulate it in your livewell and blilge pumps. Any residual water in the pumps will crack them if they freeze. Toss a little in the bilge area for good measure as well. Make sure there is no moisture in the steering mechanics that can freeze and bind as well. If it is sea star, no problem. The rest is SOP for an outboard in any state. Doug

I would check the LU for water also…. I do everthing stated above for winterazation and I also use that time to change my LU oil…If you have Water in the LU it could cause issues….(I just change it every year as part of my maintenance SOP) I would just ask the guy to give you an extra 50 bucks to winterize it for him and you would be ahead of the game….(Or maybe a Montana hunt that would be better yet…LOL) Of course if you arent real familiar with the tasks you may not want to take that responsibility, but there is a ton of information and videos online on how-to winterize an outboard…Last edited by brnzbaklvr on October 4th, 2009, 8:26 am, edited 1 time in total.

BCB is right on. I really dont think there is a need for the RV antifreeze in the livewells, pumps and bilge. It wouldnt hurt anything, just not necessary. I lived in Indiana all my life and never did anything with antifreeze. What little water that might be in there, if it does freeze, wont damage anything, there wont be enough to expand and break anything.

I guess Im wrong. Its your boat. Doug Doug, Your not wrong, though on a recent 20 year or younger BCB model the lines all drain and the winter situations were planned for. We know you have been watching this board for a while since your post on the Invitational we saw last year. And you know how many frozen pump issues you have seen.
