We suggest 12 gauge and do not consider it overkill based upon charting the demand and considering loss at connections. We also feel small wires to the newer high demand units are a factor, due to supply being on the lower side of adequate, and any increased demand on a system then lowers that supply to the small unit wires. This lowers the quality of supply to the unit through those smaller leads. We know the small wires have worked fine for decades, though the problems seem to be more inherent on the larger screen and processor, or color units we have most lately. Dont forget that large GPS units were seldom sold by any company prior to the Cougar FTD and large console for the Lcx-15 units in 2003. Lowrance hardly sold GPS and no color prior to that. Now it is common and moving very fast. Thus this is a moving target we are all trying to hit. We are not sure any of the electronic depth/GPS manufacturers have properly identified the overall aspects of voltages, line drop, connections or corrosion. Let alone battery quality, cranking demand issues, aging starters, trim pump motors, hydraulic jackpkates, power poles, stereos, and more factors that have been taxing the entire system more. We feel electronics manufacturers all have some in depth homework on bass boat electronics and longer term use, before they improve systems and eliminate this potential issue.
