Is there any wood used in the construction of our boats ?
BCB transitioned to all fiberglass construction during the 2000-2001 model years.
100% fiberglass construction. “Wood” is a four-letter word…
There are a lot of older BCB boats out there w/ wood in the construction. As long as the wood is properly encapsulated in fiberglass it shouldnt be an issue. I would not hesitate to own an older BCB model that was well taken care of w/ wood in it. But the new models are all wood free.
really ,my 06 has wood in it. might not be structural but there is factory wood in it.
No smbass, there is no wood in the manufacturing of your 2006 model. They have been all fiberglass hulls since 2000-2001 as mentioned. The very first original fiberglass stringer model transoms had 36 pound density, glass filled, urethane foam core transoms. The transoms were too easily compressed and the foam has memory leaving indentation. Though some competition still uses 18 pound density transoms. BCB went back to laminated transoms till they could complete the all fiberglass transoms. Any hull with an All Fiberglass hull decal is All Fiberglass, going back to 2000. The integration of all fiberglass was done quietly and without fanfare or promotion of the production process until all models were transitioned. The Pantera III being last model integrated to All Fiberglass hulls. There was an occasion where a former supervisor used a (1) 5/8″ x 2″ x 3″ piece of wood in poor judgement and without approval, in one minor area of a few boats. That was quickly ended and was an error by the individual, who is no longer a BCB member. The hulls are absolutely all fiberglass, hull, transom, stringers, vee drain, floor and all! The decks have some 70 pound Klegecel or Airex board and a few parts of the 36 pound glass filled urethane foam board. And the deck petitions are all fiberglass. Consoles are also fiberglass with some having a backup in the urethane foam board, and all boxes are fiberglass and not plastic. The lids went to aluminum as a replacement to replace fiberglass lids. Previous fiberglass lids we have not had one single lid we are aware of replaced due to wood rotting. However we could no longer promote the no wood theory if lids were wood cores and we do not feel the foam is a fit for lids. This has since been proven by lid cracking and failures in a competitors boats. We continue to work on lids annually to they and get back to fiberglass lids which weigh less than aluminum. We would like to return to the lighter fiberglass lids when we find an efficient feasible design a durable also.rlb8s is right in that wood is a good and efficient component done properly. We feel it is much better than some other products that are in use today by other companies. Though it is consumer tabu in boats and not an accepted method no matter how good it is for some areas.BCB
My 92 PII has wood in it, and the transom is as solid as the day I picked it up. Only problem I ever had was the floor next to the console. And it is 19 years old this monthLove my “OLD CAT” (Sorry Rick, you will not get rich from guys like me. You just build them too good!!!!!!) The reason I asked was , a photo of my Eyra under construction appears to have plywood being used.
It should be 36 pound urethane glass reinforced board and not wood. The deck petitions are often mistaken for wood due to the color. That is what we think you see in your Eyra. There are some prop sticks and holders used in construction that are only spacers and holders.
Thanks for the feedback.Take a look at BASBO803F010, The third photo.I wood be relieved to know this is not pine plywood.BCB NOTE: See the image below and comment. The image does show a plywood for tooling only as this is one of the original Eyra models in 2010. It was not left in the hull though was used to fit for the molds. Your hull is one prior to having parts made and has the first true foam boxes without cut and fit techniques.Last edited by MCat on March 13th, 2011, 8:44 pm, edited 1 time in total.
