Yellowing Gelcoat on my 2001 Pantera II

In 2006 I bought a beautiful used 2001 Pantera II Bass Cat. I put new carpet in it and it looked like new. It ran like a top and purred like a kitten. I have babied the boat and protected it from the elements as much as possible. But last year it began to yellow, I assume due to oxidiation. The upper portion looks like it is covered in pollen. I took it to a fiberglass shop and they tested a small area with cleaning and buffing. It came back over the weekend, so they told me they could not help me. They also told me a boat of that quality should not fade so quickly. A friend told me Bass Cat had a problem with yellowing from the rosin during that time, but had resolved it with 2002 and later. What can I do? It is a great boat that has faded before its time.

Thanks, I will do that at my earliest convenience. The other day at the boat dock a man approached me and asked if I liked my Bass Cat. I told him I really liked it. He said he was travelling to Kansas City to look at a 2007 Bass Cat to possibly buy. I told him to check for a couple of things, including the yellowing. I also told him to look and see if the hot foot was better positioned near the side. On my 2001 model, it sticks out about 8 inches more to the left than I would want it. He seemed grateful. He also noticed the yellowing on my boat. I told him it was much improved on later models, so not to worry.Thanks again!Dennis

Contact [email protected] on the gel issue, and possible solutions. The hotfoot is positioned correctly, as it must be placed such as to eliminate the possibility of screwing through the hull. BCB still does not recommend a foot throttle for most applications. And any nine y.o. boat will fade some, especially a white one. It may require sanding and reapplication of clear, but BCB can elaborate on that.Last edited by dbasketman on April 27th, 2010, 8:42 pm, edited 1 time in total.

DWS,There is not an issue of yellowing on gel coat. There was an issue with a clear gel coat for a brief period of time in 1998 and 1999. Though only flake boats were effected. The yellowing is just like a milk jug, you put it in the sun it yellows. Boats are no different and are not different by brands. They all do it at a pace regulated only by UV exposure for most. BCB

Thanks, It is still a great boat. I will learn to overlook the yellow, I guess. Someday I hope to save up and get a new one.

DWS, You can restore the finish with sanding and polishing on the boat. It just takes time and effort, or you can have it done. BCB

Had a 1997 Pantera II that did the same thing. Spent the evenings one winter with rubbing compound and a lot of elbow grease and all of the yellow disappeared. Had to work on a small section at a time and go over it several times.
