I would contact a local attorney, Most non-compete contracts are scare tactics. However, a Attorney might be able to help you find a way out. Has the company fullfilled all of its contractual obligations ie: salary, bonuses,401k, benefits, promotions, etc? If not your contract with them is void. A contract is only as good as the person writing the document, and if any part of the contract is not fullfilled the entire contract is in breach.
