I just had that motor rebuilt in 2008 by the best Mercury mechanic in the southeast. Spent around 3k. Replaced crankshaft, all pistons and rods. I never had any issues with the motor after I had it rebuilt whatsoever. He used high performance parts on everything that was replaced. Sorry to hear you had issues with that motor. I only sold it because my wife started fishing with me and she wanted a double console. I really enjoyed the P3 and I spent alot of money trying to keep it in great condition. I replaced seats and carpet 1 month before I sold it. I also put brand new trolling motor on it in summer 2009. Also new tires in 2008, new bunk boards in 2009 and many other things . I bought the boat from a guy in Arkansas in 2007. I liked the P3 better than the 2007 P2 that I have now.
