Mooseorgorilla, if you were to buy a Cougar Adv set up exactly the way mine is itll cost you around $53,000-$56,000. Ive seen some brand new for $49,900, with a 250 ProXS with entry level electronics and really no upgrades. Stripped down with a 225, you can probably find one for around $45k. No matter the setup, none of those prices are bad for a 20 footer with a large engine.

Ive cut the keel protector off where it has become unglued, provided enough of the protector is there provide the protection the keel needs. Ive also attempted to clean up the surface and the keel protector, and attempted to “re-epoxy” it back on, which did not last long. I suggest one of two things, start over and install a new one, or get a Hambys installed. Knock on wood, but in the many years Ive run a Hambys Ive never had any problems.

I suggest you mount the HDI transducer externally. Theres two crystals in one HDI transducer, one that works at the 83/200 frequency and one that works at the 455/800 frequency. The 83/200 (2D sonar), better known as the broadband sonar crystal, will work just fine in a shoot-thru-fiberglass-hull application, but the 455/800 DownScan Imaging (DSI) crystal wont work nearly as good as advertised, or wont work at all in some cases if mounted in the boat. The DSI wont work well much beyond 5-10 mph, even if mounted in the most the perfect location externally on your hull. The 2D sonar will work good at much higher speeds installed internally or externally. The exact speed at which you get a good 2D reading will be dictated by mounting location. Ive had some 2D transducers mounted internally that have read bottom up to around 65 mph. Hope this helps.

I was extremely happy when those Elite-7 units came out. It created a less than $1,000 option for a mid/large screen head unit the value-minded angler could afford. It has almost everything most get in much more expensive units. Before the Elite-7s were introduced Lowrance did not have an option for a guy to buy a unit with broadband sonar, NMEA 2000 networking in a standalone unit that used the same blue connectors as the LCX, LMS, and HDS color screen units. So with the blue connectors if youre replacing or moving one of the previously mentioned units, you wont have to change any cabling, just add the HDI transducer. The Elite-7 can share waypoints with another Elite-7 or more expensive HDS units, and has the same exact sonar (broadband) as the HDS units, with a built in antenna, all for around $700. The screen resolution and detail is amazing, I absolutely love these units.

To answer the mounting hole question. Ive used aluminum plates on the backside of the hole on a buddy of mines 2008 Cougar FTD when he went from an LCX-27 to an HDS-7. Its still holding up after 4 years.

Im sure you can find one with a transducer a little cheaper, but unless $350 is your price range I would suggest you get the Elite-5 HDI with the 83/200/455/800 transducer for another $100-$150. Itll give you more bang for your buck. You may also consider one of the Elite-7s.

I have a habit of not reading through all the posts, reading is not on of my favorite things to do. I also have a habit of trying to help, which is what I attempted to do. Glad to see you got what you wanted.
