how large?
I certainly dont do the technical analysis that BCB does on batteries, but I have always made it a point to run series 30 or 31 marine batteries in my boats, both for the cranking battery and the trolling batteries. Size does matter, and there is a HUGE difference in amperage and reserve capacity between a 24 series and a 30/31 series. My personal choice is the Trojan SCS 225–it has served me well, and Ive never had a power issue on the water. Mike Whitten/Germantown, TN
I have the same, 3 each, 2006, Trojan SCS 225s in my 06 PIV. No issues at all.
Not to dispute Mr. Whitten as Trojan is a good battery in comparison to the Never Starts and others. Though, we actually killed two SCS 225, and also the 200 Series Trojans in our testing here. Though we killed a lot of batteries in various brands the past couple of years. They are good batteries in comparison and should do a fine job for most. The larger the better and we set on Exide XMA 31 series AGM style as being the better of our test. You can buy comparable batteries and we have a list on the FAQ section of similar batts. Though whatever you get, quality returns on batteries. We all get tired opf replacing the lawn mower, four wheeler, motorcycle and etc batteries on our toys. They have little option except to build lesser quality for price points, when if we would all just belly up and buy a better battery the life of those would more than pay itself, and the cost would diminish in comparison from higher volumes. Though we are all just a little stringent and save a nickel to spend a dollar sooner. Trolling and Cranking batteries are no different. I have over 400 hrs on my 05 Classic… Running the same Trojans I got with the boat……..use it 2-4 times a week guiding www.fishpickwick.com I keep a close watch on them and keep the fluid level up in the batteries… & recharcge every outing….almost scared to say anything about them….you know how that goes….. I think youll be happy with the service of either choice…win win situation…Cpt.Gary Harlan (Harlo) USCG Liscd Fishing Guide Tishomingo, MS Roger Stegalls Professional Guide Service Sponsors: BassCat (of course!), Strike King, Falcon Graphite Rods, Gary Yammamoto Custom Baits

Needs to be 1000 CCA.
BEEN RUNNING 4 OPTIMAS FOR 4 YEARS AND STILL TICKING!!!BAYOU BANDIT
The new AC Delco batteries are no longer sealed, and I did not see where they indicated maintenance free on the label. That is a shame, because I have used AC Delco batteries since the early 1990s on all of my boats. Also, the largest is now a 29 series and it does not have 1000 cranking amps as recommended by Mercury. Do you guys use sealed batteries for cranking and trolling motor batteries? Thanks again, Corky
i recently threw in 3 each cabella series 27s on my 06 p4. last three tourneys, the winds were terrible, trolling motor was given an extreme workout. they performed flawlessly. i am happy i spent the cash on them.
Have been using the Cabelas AGMs. I use a Group 27 cranking which is 1200 MCA and 180 RC.I use (2) Cabelas Group 30 AGMs for the trolling motor 1525 MCA and 205 Reserve capacity. Completley sealed, they have held up exceptionally well. I fish strong tidal water on the Upper Chesapeake Bay rivers/Potomac systems and stay on the Trolling motor most of the day against the tide flow. My previous Interstates, and Everstarts would be done by the last hours of the TX……these AGMs are still going strong. No maintenance. Clean the terminals at the begining of the season and that is it. They charge quick, 4- 5 hours with a 10 amp Guest charger.http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas…=true
Ive been very pleased w/ the sears die hard platinum series. I run a 36 volt TM w/ only 3 total batteries. They were reasonably priced too.
With the three die hard platinums do you get any interference on your depth finders? Do you run humminbird or Lowrance?
I have a 225 optimax and would not reccomend under 1000 cca. It starts fine with lower ccas but at least on mine with lower cca brand new batteries my 522 lowrance would turn off every time i started the motor. When i went to a 1000 cca duralast that problem stopped. Battery was about 90 dollars with tax . also the engine seems to spin faster on the starter than before. irv
