Question for anyone and everyone……………….my cousin bought this boat from his b.i.l. , it’s the eyra 17ft with a 150hp evinrude. when the throttle is applied the bow rises a lot. scared the hell out of me the one and only time i was in it. the plugs have been changed, stabilizers have been mounted on the motor but it still does it. his b.i.l. took it to a local boat dealer but they couldn’t loosen the bolts to adjust the motor. any suggestions?
More info pls. Is the motor trimmed all the way down? How much weight in the back of the boat? Pics would be good. how old is the boat, is the wood in the hull soaked? Lots of stuff to look at, info is good.
the boat is a 1994………yes the motor is fully trimmed. the boat sits in the water fine, not too much weight. highly doubt any wood is soaked since the boat does not stay in the water and was garage kept when not in use. it has done this since the b.i.l. bought it. when the boat does plane out, you’re hauling ass. tried to adjust the height of the motor but even the local boat shop couldn’t loosen the bolts on the jack plates.
Sounds like it could be a prop issue. A little too much pitch, and a boat can really point the nose at the sky. When propping my Sabre FTD, one prop would make the nose go straight up, but would eventually give me some speed. Dropped down one in pitch and stuck on a 4 blade and it jumps out of the hole and runs really well.
You did not mention prop pitch. What is it? See if you can get with a dealer and borrow some props to try. Not only pitch, but also style. If your prop to hull distance looks good, I bet on pitch.
The original Eyra model has a bow high hole shot for rough water operation back in the old 150 days of Bassmaster. The best propellers for that rig were 23” or 24” Predator PP series 3 blades. We have not run the new Raker series on it though it should run fine and we would think about a Fury 23 also.
i’m just learning as i go here so please bear with me, never had a boat but i’m trying to help my cousin out since he takes me fishing sometimes. lol i don’t know what the pitch of the prop is but i do know it needs to be replaced. the b.i.l. ran over something and bent the edges of the prop. just found this out. as far as hull to prop distance, there is a formula for that right? like 10% of the distance . so if it’s 23 inches then at 10% it should be 2.3 ….correct?
well i’m having a hard time finding any predator props, apparently they are discontinued and the other 2 you mentioned are not cheap. lol do you happen to know the pitch of the original props?
lilbiddy,
let’s us check older inventory and see if we have an older Predator. We did have an old one and you will have to press an OMC hub in it. A good propeller shop can manage that.
BCB
how did you make out looking for the prop?
i got a chance to go look at the motor and prop tonight. from what found, it’s a stiletto E800319….. 14.25 with a 19 pitch. now the guy from bass cat that replied earlier said something about predator pp props, 23″ or 24″. is that the circumference of the prop or the pitch?
That’s the pitch, lilbiddy.
Different moderator here, though we will say that no propeller is going to perform right once it’s been damaged. We would find an older 22” Raker, 22 Fury, or 23 Shooter for that OMC engine and see what it does. The props must be clean on this rig. They were searching for the Merc hubbed Predator and we don’t know the outcome.
i’d like to thank everyone for the information you provided. between that and reading what i could find………there is a ton of stuff to know when trying to choose the right prop and pitch.
Having run a 96 Eyra, if you think that 19 pitch was scootin wait til he can get a 22 or 23 loaded up properly.
going fast doesn’t bother me or my cousin………..what bothers us is that the boat would damn near stand on the rear end for quite a bit before settling out on plane at full throttle. anything less than full throttle and the boat would stay standing on end.
