Since you will probably be marking according to transducer, I would put it as close to the transducer as possible, which would mean the back of the boat.JohnJones Trolling Motor Services870 773 3474Motorguide/MinnKota/PowerPole/Lowrance/Humminbird
I just put a 1197 on my 93PII, ended up mounting the transducer to the jack plate. nice thing was I did not need a ram mount the dash is so big on a 93PII that it fit perfect.
I have mine on the rear next to the vents for the one on the console and on the bow next to the TM for the front 788. I am not sure about mounting the tranducer to the jack plate however. I have my SI puck mounted there and that works fine for that unit, but at high speeds the dual beam on the 788 may need to be lower on the boat so to not loose contact with the water. I think my jack plate, even at the lowest point, is out of the water on a high speed run. I could be wrong.
Brian seemed to think yall might be interested to see how we mounted our new units. We mounted a new puck on the bow and a new puck where the old one was on the stern. Wicked thick fiberglass on the bow. We mounted the bow unit (858) on two blocks of nylon to raise it up a little for easier viewing/access. Installing the nylon was the trick. We thru-bolted it to the bottom of the well. And I reached the bottom of the bolts with a nifty reacher and thin shoulders. Removing the rod organizer for access was key. Then I held my phone up there for a picture of the finished install. Finished product. We mounted the transducer on the old MG with a mounting kit from Humminbird. Might consider adding some protection once I knock it off on a stump this April at Santee. Now on to the 998 on the helm. We pulled the old unit and couldnt fit the new unit in the old hole or in a new hole (we thought). So, we converted the old hole to a mounting plate for a RAM that would hold the new unit. One stainless plate with a backing frame, bolted through the fiberglass. We had to remove the wheel to get the right drilling angle. Then we cut a route for the wiring. Well cover it with a little cover dodad. We mounted the transducer with one of those Transducer Shield & Saver things as recommended here. It worked great. We used some adhesive tie-wrap holders for the cable. Those may or may not hold up…And thats pretty much it. Cant wait to get it in the water. The best location for the transducer is in the sump internal and not outside, unless you prefer the outside. Then you do not mount it below the surface, though just above.
Im not sure if theres even room in the sump with 2 bilge pumps and the live well valve. I think the transducer for the in dash flasher is down there as well. I can go closer to the centerline of the boat and see what happens. I currently have it where the old Lowrance X70 was and it read pretty well but the transducer is a little more below the hull than they recommended.
There is a 6″ x 6″ area right in front of the drain tube in the rear and thats where we would put it, on one side or the other.
I assume your talking on the out side of the hull, There is an area that will work there I think. Thanks for the help.
No, we were speaking of internal. There is a dedicated area outside the hull also on the secondary step, though it is not for use under power. Idling only as an pit side transducer will not work well on the bass boat hulls today. The staff at any death finder company should know that.
I should mention that this is all on an 07 Puma.
Funny, I was just about to post a link to your blog with the install description. Think I still will. Good write up by the way.http://www.jodywhitefishing.com/2013/01 … stall.html
Thanks Brian.
Just a tip… once you get a lead wire through connect another string and leave it there if you need to run any other wires or cables. Youll be glad you did.Practice Angling CPRCatchPictureRelease2010 PIV 200SHO
Take the vent off on the console side. This gives you a straight shot.Jones Trolling Motor Services870 773 3474Motorguide/MinnKota/PowerPole/Lowrance/Humminbird
Yes, remove the air cowl vent on the starboard side and you will get a better angle to feed the wiring. There will never be enough room for more wires in a closed loom for the harness as the wires all tangle, no matter how large the tubing is.
