I have had a similar experience. Only i was the one out of control. LOL The timing tab on top of block vibrated loose and fell down into the throttle linkage. I was headed for a very tight turn in a boat lane on Fork so there was no over shooting it. Luckly i kept my head and just pulled switch and coasted to a stop. But it was a “HAIR RAISING” moment for sure.

Keys are natural as you hit the ignition every time you start and stop. Safety switches are t natural and a last ditch effort usually. Panic sets in and everyone forgets, just turn the key off. You can even bump it to power down.

It is likely a switch issue from the BRP part, though they are really a different connection on the ignition switch socket. They allow the key to function without the cord on some of the earlier design. If you connect the cord they allow the engine stop switch to function. If someone has replaced the lanyard with aftermarket lanyards this could be the issue. Otherwise we think your looking at an ignition switch replacement.

The safety switch is not hard to replace, though accessing it on older boats can be a relative pain in the tail.
