I have a Verado gear case on a 250 Pro XS and have had zero problems. It has seen speeds in excess of 80.

The blow out potential comes in at above 82 MPH on the Verado style cases, and above 84 on TorqueMaster. You playing with tenths of a MPH difference, and the choice is really up to you. Though the TM gearcase is more popular. BCB

What blew up “blew up, out, and side ways” ? The mid section ?I hit a tree once and blew out the mid section but the gearcase was intact and prefectly good. I keep the gearcase as a spare.The mid section looked like someone tossed a gernade in it. I have what is left of it on the wall in my shop.

I spend some time with a business the rebuilds lower units and heads for a living for a different brand.There seems to be a plethora of cheap Chinese crap out there with 3 year no faults since they build the stuff outta cheap cheap cheap parts and cheap cheap cheap labor. The stuff is crap and thats why its a no fault warranty- its that cheap.You get what you pay for and Id buy one from Wisconsin.C.O.D. Jr. III

What year model is this engine, and is it the newer Verado style gearcase or a Torquemaster case? There were some issues several years ago on some of the Torquemaster cases, though not an abundance of them. BCB

Not with a Pro XS but with an XS (one of the few that had a defect) and an EFI. Im sure youre frustrated, but the good thing is you have warranty or insurance to cover the loss. Spend enough time on the water and things happen. Not exactly what you want to hear, but it happens!

Its an 08 and has the new gear case. I understand things will happen I just didnt expect it in under 100 hours. I am sure I will get plenty of use out of the Merc.

It happens I went through 2 lower unit in the first 140 hours. Both were due to bearing failure and covered under warranty.

The newer gearcase with the small shaft is usually very dependable.

I will check with my brother as he replaced his on his 99 Mercury/Jaguar. I think he just called Mercury and had them overnight it.

Hagler, Any 225 EFI, 200 3 Ltr. EFI or all 3 Ltr. Opti engines have your gearcase, including Pro XS models. Give the factory a call and see if they have a cull which has a bent or shipped skeg from shipments. Those would be brand new with slight damages, if they have one.

I assume you mean the housing and the gears right?You get what you pay for in lower units from what I have seen. Cheap could mean stranded in a derby later.However, want fast and cheap you can get an SEI with chinese metal. Ships to your home quickly I believe.Personally I would ask your dealer to see if you might “borrow” a lower unit and get a quality reman or new one after the BFL.C.O.D. Jr. III

False alarm!! Carrier bearing locked up. Gears, case, and shafts are perfect. Ill be back up and going tomorrow. Thanks for the replies!
