A question for you folks that have installed the new Minn Kota Ultrex. Where are you mounting the heading sensor?
The heading sensor is just a compass puck that gives direction and mounting it on the deck next to the bracket is where BCB is mounting them. The brackets mount the same and the side plate removes to expose the bolt pattern which matches MotorGuide.
When you say “bracket” do you mean trolling motor mount? Dumb question but want to get it right the first time.
Yes, that is what they meant.
It is an electric magnetic compass. If its too close to the lower unit, it will pick up the magnets and will not calibrate.Jones Trolling Motor Services870 773 3474Motorguide/MinnKota/PowerPole/Lowrance/Humminbird
I finished the installation of my Ultrex. Took it to the river yesterday, calibrated the heading sensor, set the heading offset, and everything works as advertised. I do a lot of off shore fishing and believe the addition of the Ultrex will help me catch a lot more fish. Thanks everyone, especially John of Jones Trolling Motor, for the info. Everyone that is except the BCB moderator who attempted to school me on the definition of a heading sensor. I started my career many years ago in aviation electronics. I have probably “swung” more compasses than this person will ever see, in addition to calibrating some of the more complex navigation systems of the time. If this person is supposed to help BCB in their customer relations department, he has failed miserably. All I wanted was a short straight forward answer. He obviously has not read the Ultrex heading sensor instructions regarding its location . But to give the devil its due, I did try and then installed the heading sensor adjacent to the trolling motor mount. With the trolling motor deployed it does not interfere with the heading sensor and I was able to calibrate it.Just sayin.
Did Bcb give an answer different than what is above?C.O.D. Jr. III
Dang, I guess I dont know the full story but I certainly didnt see any ill intent in the response from BCB. Maybe you talked to someone other than on this forum and thats what your comments are referring to. Seems a little on the rough side spbait. I shouldnt even comment since its of no business of mine but it seems that your response is harsh considering the comments I read above it. Chris CoupelPaulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
To each his own opinion. Suggest you read the installation instructions for the heading sensor, then read the BCB response and you might be able to see why it is half baked. Directions prohibit the installation within 24″ of a ferrous material. The trolling motor head is ferrous and if im not mistaken it also contains permanent magnets. After insulting my intelligence, his answer was in direct conflict with the installation instructions with no accompanying explanation. He could have clarified this confused country boy by saying there is no interference when the trolling motor is deployed and it works OK installed there. At least I would have known that he was aware of the Ultrex instructions. When I start drilling holes in my boat, I want to be dead sure of their location.
Any pictures of the location?

I have to ask. Is the trolling motor head not aluminum?Aluminum and stainless are nonferrous ( they dont oxidize) Im just asking.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
Minn Kota heads have been plastic for years.
I knew the top cover was plastic but wasnt for sure about the bottom cowl. When I said non ferrous want oxidize that also says its not magnetic. With that being said some stainless will attract a magnet.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
So after all this discussion, where would be the correct place to mount the heading sensor? This is a new product and we are all on a learning curve here!
