Yeppers! Some brands measure that kicked back transom as “length”, which of course, is totally unusable!
Another words, your 20 foot boat is actually a 19 footer when measured by BCB specs.
I agree that there is some misconception with where the width is and being that a BCB has the troller pushed forward, most BCB’s are generally pretty long on the front deck compared to most brands when comparing comparable lengths. After fishing out of many brands and primarily fishing partner tournaments or fishing with 3 kids, length and width is my top priority. My partner has a 21′ R boat and while I dont care for the ride or how wet your get, its a dream to fish from when the troller is down. I have also found that length and sheer weight help on lakes that have 40-45 mph speed limits along with the 2 foot swirling mess of waves (these are the conditions I spend most my time in). You cant get fast enough to get on top of the waves in those conditions. Long/heavy boats eat that stuff up better regardless of brand.
While it may be an unfair comparison, below is the dimensions of a cougar ftd and a FX21.

Yep, how about a Lynx…

From those numbers, the 21 foot Skeeter gets you 4 inches of length on the front deck, and 2 inches wider at the consoles than the 20 foot lynx.
The Lynx has an inch more of beam. Its also carries 15 gallons more fuel.
If a speed limit is not imposed, you can bump up over a 250hp on the Lynx. The Skeeter is limited to 250.
The most important thing in my opinion between the two boats, at 45 mph, in big water, would be the depth and design of the bows. That would play a huge part in its ability to plow water smoothly, stay dry at low speeds. The stability when the TM is down would be close, especially with the 96 inch beam of the Lynx.
As for the OP’s question, Priced comparatively, it would be the FX21 and the Lynx. Not the Cougar or Puma.
The ZX250 series is priced toward the Advantage series Cougar. The point your actually making.
Of course the numbers are the same for that model Skeeter also. Definitely a good value with the SHO.
If money were not a object, a Lynx would be in the cards. The boat that Im strongly considering is the ZX250 which has the same dimensions as the FX21 that I posted. The ZX250 can be bought for about 60k with dual poles, graphs, Ultrex, hydro plate, cover and 250 SHO. This package prices comparably to the Cougar Advantage, with the Cougar Advantage probably being quite a bit more in the end. For more bells and whistles the FX21 is still much cheaper than a Lynx especially the package FX21LE.
I feel im a loyal bcb owner. Ive owned since 1989. In 89 i bought a 88 model caracal. I gave 6500.00 for that boat. By the way there wasnt many bcb boats around in my area at the time. I kept that boat untill 2014 when i bought my 13 p2. Bcb is a great boat with upper end components no doubt!. I understand quality components as well as a quality staff dosent come cheap. Though DEMAND is wat drives our prices. As with alot bcb is selling quicker than they can make. To be honest this absolutely blows my mind. Not just with boats but the industry in general. Will they ever price themselves out? Who would ever woulda thought the fishing industry would have the rich palate it has today?
First of all I would like to thank BCB for all the boat choices they provide us. 3 boats over 19′, 5 boats over 20′ and a 21 1/2, not to mention the boats under 19. In reading all of this I was wondering if there is or if there will be a continuing market for 21 footers that would justify another 21 footer to the BCB fleet. With the introduction of a 21 to a 21′ 4″ boat how would that effect Jag sales? I don’ t see how a 21 footer with the quality we have become spoiled to and production costs could not cost in the 70’s. I was wondering if there is a need to have both the Puma and the Cougar. Are they not both 20’4″ boats with the main difference being deck layout? If there is a market for 21 footers could the Puma be redesigned to that range? I am sure folks a lot smarter than me are doing market analysis as we speak. I am just glad I joined the family years ago.
The Puma, Cougar and Eyra definitely fit a large niche for guys who want an all around performing boat. Nothing on the water competes with them for what they are designed to do. They are also the breadwinners for BCB. I do feel that we will see the Puma and Cougar evolve into somewhat wider platforms as the market and competitive brands have moved in this direction over the last 5-6 years. There is a large market for the 21’ish boat (20’8″+) and I believe this is going to grow. For many guys such as myself, having the need to go 70 is non existent but wanting a large stable platform to fish out of is necessary. While the Jaguar is a dream boat for most, the cost puts it out of the competitive market for most. The Lynx has obviously been a home run but I do see a need for an economically priced 21’ish boat. BCB has been able to do this with the reintroduction of the pantera classic and cougar advantage.
Lynx or Puma/cougar update with a nonskid deck similar to Yarcraft 2095 and saltwater-ready. PLEEEEEEEASE.
The Hybrid is not dead. Completely different hull than the 210 Elite. It’s still being tweeked and won’t be released until BCB knows it’s ready. I’ve been following it since they started tinkering with it in 2014. I continue to bug BCB every couple of weeks to see what the progress is and driven it in three different phases of tweeks. I’ve purposely been holding out for it for several years and when it does get released will be in the front of the line. Gonna make a heck of a cross over boat for the Champion folks and another option for the Cat loyalists. If I got a phone call right now that one is available I’d be in my truck headed to a dealer.
I see no glaring holes in the current BCB model lineups. It’s possible they may be designing complete refreshes for when any molds from their current lineup are getting too worn out. Also, it seems fairly quiet regarding their hybrid champion hull on the puma.
My hope is they change up the Yarcraft model line. Would like to see the 219 model become similar to the 621FS – wider beam, cockpit is pushed forward. That may result in a loss of performance, but I’m trolling 6 hours for salmon with 3-4 people, and high speed for about 40 minutes – I’ll take comfort over the high performance.
Keep comments coming folks, we are following this thread.

Some choose to be innovators, others, followers. There is a reason why quality costs more and compromising quality to meet an ‘entry-level’ price-point doesn’t seem to make sense as a sustainable business model. Very few companies ‘price-cut’ their way to prosperity… When you can’t differentiate on quality and longevity, you drop your price. When your unique selling proposition is ‘lower price’ it often is the beginning of the end. We can ALL count the number of bass boat companies that have come and gone over the years by offering ‘more’ for ‘less’…
Time will tell and a great place to look is at resale value… 2 cents.
20’-6″ 2000 Cougar w/ Merc 225 EFI – I’ve never passed a phoenix or skeeter ‘package’ with a 250 that I’d like more… and I’m still passing them, a lot.
Best fishes!
waknbass15 wrote:While I totally understand that BCB makes a higher quality product there just isn’t an economical offering in the 21′ class of boat. I would like to see a 21′ offering that is similar to the Cougar Advantage promo. There are several brands offering 21′ class package boats in the sub 60k range. For me, it is probably going to force me into another brand. The Cougar isn’t big enough and I can’t afford the Lynx.
Isn’t big enough for what???
