Ive had two Cougars with 250HOs and have tested Tempest, Trophy, Fury and Raker props a great deal both on the lightning and new gearcase. By far the best prop is the Fury. It is best on acceration and top-end. The pitch you need will be based on the gear ratio in your lower unit. On a 2009 Cougar FTD with a 2010 250HO I used a 25 Fury in the warm months and a 26 in the cool months. The 1999 Cougar is a bit lighter than the newer FTDs (unless there is an added flipping deck) so it may need a 27. My second favorite is a Trophy (with blow out ring and all PVS plugs open) but the Fury is about 2 miles per hour faster. The Tempest (a modified one) and Raker have decent top ends and nice lift but I dont like the slow speed manners – each has a bit of “slap” and are not as smooth at slow speed. Get a Fury and youll be happy!!!Last edited by ARBCB on August 16th, 2011, 4:32 am, edited 2 times in total.

He is a great kid! My son fished against him today in the Mid South Junior Bass Club event on Pickwick. It was great to see Matt after his trip to the National in Hot Springs last week. He was still beaming and he gave me a big hug first thing this morning at the ramp! These kids bass clubs are terrific. It was fun to interact with them as they checked out the Eyra I ran today.Keep on fishin Matt!!

Sweet! Ive got one on order that will be ready in a few weeks, cant wait. I ran a borrowed one in a tournament this weekend and loved it. The front deck center compartment layout is terrific!!! Love all the other features as well. And boy would it run….

I had a 2006 Cougar AE (was called an FTD then) with a 225HO with the lightning gearcase of that era – I ran a 27 Trophy and 74mph was common. A buddy owns it now and runs a 26 Fury at the same speeds.I also had a 2008 Cougar FTD with a 250HO and lightning gearcase. Best prop was a 26 Fury, it was 1.4mph faster than a Trophy. Top Speeds were 75.7-79.4 depending on load, time of year, etc. (Note that I ran 82.6 with a modified Tempest by myself with a light load after break in – was a hot motor)Lastly I had a 2009 Cougar FTD with a 250 HO. With Lightning 1.71 gearcase the 25 and 26 Fury were best, ran 75.5-78.6 depending (max ever was 79.9 after break in with light load=not quite as strong as 2008 motor) With SLE 1.85 gearcase; 26 Fury ran 75.5-76.7 by myself, 26 Raker II ran 73.3-76.9 and 28 Raker 75.1-79.1.The SLE is a bit slower but more reliable than the Lightning and has a diff gear ratio which means a bit higher pitch prop. Either HP will do well but I highly recommend the Fury prop!! The Cougar AE is a great boat and I LOVE the front deck compartment layout. Good luck!

Cant say for sure about the pitch since my 2006 225 had a different lower unit and great ratio. The Fury for sure but the best guess at this point is a 26. The hole shot was good with the Furys and Trophys I ran.Theres not as much data out there on the E-Tecs and the lower units changed for this season so less prop advice is available. The 250 would have better resale than a 225 if that matters to you as well as more top end if and when you wanted it.

Thats a great system! I use those ring clips you can guy at an office products store and run the ring through the holes on the bags. Then I can flip through the bags to quickly find the color I am looking for. I store one body style per ring. I load into my boat the expected body styles I may want for that day. It is all about packing as compactly as possible and having quick access.

I did extensive testing on a 2008 Cougar FTD and some on a 2009 same boat, both with 250HOs. The Fury proved to be 1.4mph faster than the Trophy. The Trohly is a GREAT all around prop and is smooth but the Fury is just a bit better all the way around. My bet is that a 25 Fury will met your goals.I got to where I ran a 26 Fury in the cool months and a 25 in the warm months. Both of which I left the PVS vent plugs open. Ive known Gary for a long time. It chokes and tears me up that we wont get to see his loving smile and hear his jovial laugh. I dont know that I have met a person that would always show so much interest in me. He set the curve for being so genuine and truly caring and he ALWAYS made me feel so good. Gosh, the world would be a wonderful place if everyone was like him. The best part of registration at the BCB OI every year was getting a hug from Gary at the end of the line. I sure was looking forward to that this year. I am going to dearly miss our many, many conversations about the state of the industry and our companies. I could share business things with him that I wouldnt with others and I always could trust him and I respected and desired his opinions. What a wonderful man! Im sure he blessed many folks like he did me. We all need to remember to be more like him; to always smile even when we dont feel like it, show more interest in others than self and to love those around you. Traits like Jesus, eh?I pray that God takes care of Judy and the rest of his family, comforts them and meets their needs…and also inspires them about Garys life that they got to share and to witness.Allan RansonLast edited by ARBCB on April 2nd, 2014, 4:24 pm, edited 1 time in total.
