This really is a fun event….the anglers are very accessible to the fans. I had the good fortune of meeting Chris in the past, but after years of reading Judds posts on this board, it was nice to finally put a name with a face. Now, if theyll just cut me a deal on that Cougar at the display Ill put my P4 up for sale drive home to VA instead of fly. Its one of the few boats where my wife has approved of the color scheme.
I had a light gray boot on my first boat and white on the last two. I fish a low of shallow stumpy water and always thought that the light color would show scratches less. Is that accurate or have others had opposite experiences? Not ordering my next boat until next year, but frankly Ive seen some color combos with black boots that Ive really liked, and if they show just as well, might be tempted.
BCB made a very wise choice when they signed Britt Myers onto their ProStaff. Ive now had 2 opportunities to interview him and hes been beyond pleasant, beyond professional both times. Standing in the weigh-in line yesterday, his smile could not have been bigger. When he pulled out that big fish for pictures backstage, you would have thought it was Christmas, his birthday and the Superbowl all rolled into one. Normally I take a nap between morning coverage of the event and heading back to the venue for afternoon interviews, but today Im too jittery. Youd think I was the one with AOY/Classic/Requalification on the line
I feel as if I jinxed him. For what its worth, I approached him after the weigh-in to get my interview, and while he was clearly upset that he missed his chance, he showed the same class that I wrote about earlier. Still smiling, honest, forthright, didnt try to blame anybody else for his misfortune. Whether or not he ever catches another fish, the kid is a winner.
Marty was a good sport about that!Let us know what other “prickly” questions you want answered at Wired2Fish and well try to get you the answers directly from the sources.
Everyone please be safe — no need to take chances by driving an extra few MPH just to get somewhere a few minutes faster. I talked to Kota Kiriyama last night as he towed his new Puma FTD from the factory back home to Alabama — he said the roads were treacherous. Unless you need to be out there, dont go.
Well, the various “K. Shorts” didnt waste any time signing up….the rest of us might as well just sit this one out!
Ill be there working for BassZone and Wired2Fish. If its not too hot out, look for me in a W2F pullover — the goober with a notebook.
James is a consummate professional and, more importantly, a good person — Ive joked with him a couple of times that hes “too nice to be a professional angler.” Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come this year.
Would You Buy A Used Car From This Man? February 27, 2009How can you tell when a bass pro is lying? His lips are moving.Look carefully at this picture of Elite Series pro James Niggemeyer and the new Sexy Swimmer from Strike King. Without the benefit of a soundtrack or a caption you cant really tell whats going on, but its a scene youll rarely see with a professional angler in the middle of it.I went up and asked James to explain what he likes about the bait and why its better than comparable items from other manufacturers. His response was to tell me that he hadnt fished it yet (that bait is one of the first six off the production line) and that I should ask someone else at Strike King for an explanation.Let me get this straight – a bass pro deferring on an opportunity to run his yap? Unwilling to lie through his teeth to explain why his sponsors product is the greatest thing since crunchy peanut butter and beer in a can? Cmon, man, at least give me the song and dance about “superior components” and “decades of on-the-water testing and refinement.”Nope. None of that. The bottom line is that when James tells me a product is good at some point in the future, Ill believe him. There is some integrity left in a world largely comprised of patch pirates, ship jumpers and sponsor whores. Id buy a boat, a truck or a bait from James with confidence.
So my first check should be the grounds on the panel on the inside of the transom?
Terry, thanks for being my designated whine-ee. Ive rearranged my work schedule so I can pick it up next week when I get back. Senor Short — where are you going to be and will Barone be with you? Do I have to wait until the Classic to get a dose of wisdow? (assuming Bowman lets me out of the media dungeon)
Sorry Ill miss you at Timonium. Be sure to say hi to the guy who sells the wonder mop in the back. You do know that Dunkin Donuts was founded in Massachusetts, dont you? If you hear about a kidnapped outdoor writer just hope its Clemons and not me.
Both Mark Rogers and Paul Hirosky ran Gamblers on the Elite Series. One of this years rookies will run their new line. Once upon a time, I believe Rick Morris ran one during the Top 150s.
We had two bad weather days at Falcon and one good day — but Falcon is like pizza, even the bad ones are pretty good. No monsters — my friend Kelly Jones had an 8 and I had a 7. Pretty hard to complain about that. Trying to figure out when were going to go back — probably late spring, when theyre post-spawn and ganged up.
