Hi Mike,Please send me pictures also. How many hours on the Optimax? Any mars? Thanks,Edwin Reid]
Please email pictures, location and warranty. Also list of options. Thanks, Skipjack68
Just this morning my hunting buddy told me about someone falling out of a tree stand with a rope tied around hime, upside down. He managed to get to his cell phone and called 911. It took the people 3 hours to find him and he was yelling for help all the time. He said he was ok. Is this the same person from Arkansas or another story. My thought was that a person could not hang up side down that long and live? Skipjack68 FL
1991 Sabre that still gets “Nice Boat” comments at the ramp. Got one yesterday at Crystal Cove in Palatka, FL. This was Ron Pierces personal boat in April 1991 and I bought it from him the same year. I fished the 2006 Bass Cat Tournament in 2006 for the first time, (112th) and the Bass Cat factory did a great job for me replacing hoses, pumps, charger, windshield and etc. I had the motor rebuilt by Miller Marine in Ocala in 2003 and had the trailer re-powder coated at the same time. I would like to have a new Pantera, but this boat refuses to break. I tell my wife and financial secretary that it would be better to trade while it runs good, but what do wives know? Someday I will trade, but till then, I guess I should be happy with “Nice Boat” remarks and take it fishing every once in a while. Skipjack68
HI Bama, The boat is a 27 Contender Center Console. It is a 2000 model that I bought the year we retired from business, 43 years. It has twin Yamaha 200s, radar, good electronics and is a great off shore boat. I have not used it much lately, as I have some back problems, but my grandson Reid has become an excellent Captain and he takes it out when he can. He keeps the boat waxed and ready to go. Right now he has all he can do to keep up with his final year of engineering school. Reid had it out recently. He went out about 60 miles in the Gulf and had a limit of Grouper, Gag and Red, and some other fish. He had three adults with him and they were impressed with his ability to put them on fish. Of course, now days fishing the Gulf gets expensive. Diesel to pull the boat at over $4.00 a gallon, and using about 90 gals of gas in the boat all adds up to an over $400 trip. The boat does a good job, cruise at 40 MPH and will run 54 WOT. Skipjack
I hooked up an air tool chisel and went to work on two of the four transducers that were mounted in the sump. One came up with a bump of a hammer, which is probably why my finder was interment at times and not reading in shallower depths. The other one was tough to get out, but the air tool did the job. I bought a rotary air tool with a two inch set of sanding pads and smoothed out the bottom. The jell coat came up with the epoxy that held the old transducer. I am going to purchase a shoot through the hull transducer tomorrow and install it instead of the transom transducer. I will have a new transom transducer for sale if any one would like one. Thanks again for the suggestions. Skipjack68
My 91 Sabre has a socket in the main deck that I move my front pedistal seat to, which I do when ever I am going to move at speed. I find this handy and I like the looks of my boat going down the hi way with out the seat up front. I have wondered if this is a standard feature now or if it is an option? Skipjack
I bought a new Quantum Energy E760PT based on having good service out of two older reels that I got with a new trolling motor and also the new $50 rebate. I liked it so well, I bought another from Cabelas, E770. I used it the first time yesterday and it sounded like a worn out reel. Real noisey. I brought it back home and was going to lube the new reel. It has a new screw-on handle and when I tried to turn it counter clockwise to remove the handle, it would not buldge. Rather than destroy the reel, I call Quantum and a lady answered. She told me to tighten the drag all the way down, move a geared washer away from the handle and it would un-screw. Why was that little tidbit not in the instruction pamlet? Then, following the instructions in the pamlet, I pushed a spring-loaded button under the left side of the reel and attempted to turn the side plate counter-clockwise to remove the side plate and it would not buldge. I have followed this proceedure on the two older reels and the side plate comes off easy. I am totally flustrated. Of course when I called back, I get a message to leave my number and they will call back. They didnt. Anyone have an answer for getting the side plate off, or should I return the new reel, made in China, to Cabelas? Skipjack (I hope this is appropriate for this post. I did not want to take away from it. ) Maybe I should have ordered a Bass Pro Extreme.
A new motor on an older boat in my opinion is not a good investment. The pay back is not good. A good rebuild makes more sense to me. Just get a good mechanic, unless it is not rebuild-able. MHO Skipjack
There are a lot of things above to consider. I think that if I buy a new boat, I will go with the Optimax. If I upgrade my boat to a new motor, I will go with the EFI, which will be a step up from my Carb motor. Thanks for taking the time to share on this. Skipjack
Not in gear is it? Kill switch? Dumb questions, but…………………………..
Wow,surprised you have issues with those reels. I have at least 15 of the 760 and 770 reels on JB Custom Rods. Not the first issue with any of them. They are on their second year of usage also. I called Quantum to ask about pulling maintance on them, sending them in for service and they asked amount of time estimated on each reel. I told them and they said not to even worry about maintance yet. On a side note, like anything you build a bunch of there are going to be some that just fail or dont do right. Just my two cents worth. I agree with the above on how my E760pt feels and casts. Have you had any problem geting the side plates off. I pushed the button and turned counter clockwise and clockwise. Any thing else I could have done? Skipjack
I have a 91 Sabre and over the years I have added several transducers to the three it had when I bought the boat. Last week, I installed a Lowrance 522C and it came with the tear drop transducer. I thought I was going to put the puck on the transom, but after I got it , I did not want to put holes in the transom. So I knocked out two pucks from the well where the two bilge pumps are and then bought a shoot through the hull puck locally. It came with the Lowrance epoxy package. Origionally, I had used some 5 minute plastic epoxy to put in the tear drop puck for the sonar unit I was taking off. It was not working consistent. The reason might be that it was not tight to the hull and came up easy when I tapped it a couple of times. An older shoot through the hull puck was really tight to the bottom, and I worried that I could get it out. With my grandsons help, I used a air tool with chisel and carefully cut away the old puck. This left an uneven surface, so I bought a new small vertical air tool that used two inch sanding discs. I then ground the sump well smooth where we took up the two pucks. I cut a small plastic bottle that was just bigger in diameter than the shoot through puck and used it as a dam and coated the puck with the Lowrance epoxy and the rest inside the dam. I eased the new puck inside the dam and weighted it down , I did not put a second puck back in, as I felt I would only use the new Finder/GPS unit. The next day, after the epoxy was well cured, I filled in around the newly installed puck with fiberglass resin. It looks good and the 522 Sonar is working perfectly. When I bought the new shoot-thu-the -hull transducer, the dealer had the Lowance epoxy for sale seperatly. The emoxy did not come with the tear drop transducer, but does come with the shoot through tranducer. I dont know why, because you can mount both in the hull according to the directions. The epoxy works well and I would look for some. It is avaiable on the Lowrance web site also. I got mind at Miller Marine, Ocala, FL but Gander and Dicks did not have it. Caution: Go easy with the air chisel. In the past I have done this by hand with hammer and chisel. The air tool took just a few minutes. This is a lot of detail, but since it worked so well, I thought I would tell the whle story. I now have an extra transom puck for the Lowrance 520/522 series and it should work on most of the newer models. $25 plus shipping if anyone wants to save a buck or two. Skipjack
Funny how some things simple just dont come to mind. I had trouble getting a hammer in the well to tap the old transducer. The hammer did loosen the tear drop transducer, but the round through hull was really in there tight. I hit it with the hammer and got some plastic, I tried a chisel, but did not have good leverage on the hammer. The air chisel went through it in a hurry, but you need to be careful and you have an uneven bottom to smooth. The air 2″ inch sander worked real well, but was dusty. I hope it will be a while before I have to do that again. At least, it is working fine. Skipjack
