Huh??
I am reminded of the old Lost in Space tv show robot when he says, ” that does not compute” lol
I really thank you for answering my post but I respectfully disagree because in their same 2019 boat catalog they are listing the following weight for the Margay, 17’7″ with a 90″ beam at 1250 lbs. How does a shorter and narrower boat weigh heavier then a larger boat?
Any boat manufacturer has to list the correct weight for not only the hull weight but for the trailer as well, if not could you imagine someone with a minivan towing a boat that’s supposed to weigh 2000 pounds when it actually is 3000 lb and their transmission blows up, and a slick lawyer sees this discrepancy? Oh boy.
Eventually I will be purchasing and I want a bass cat boat but I need to know more information on their 18-footer. If it is too ” light” with hull materials I will have to look at the Pantera or some other boat.
I thought this was a catalog error but my buddy who owns a Cougar has the last several years of catalogs and they all list the Sabre’s current weight the same as in 2019.
An 18 foot boat would fill my needs perfectly because of the smaller electric-only Lakes near me. This is the only reason for me bringing this up.
A big thank you for your Sabre experience! I like everything I hear in your reply.
As an update to this “weight” issue I contacted Dallas from BCB and he returned my call and was looking into this discrepancy in the brochures over the years. He stated the hull weight listed should have included the weight of the outboard motor in his opinion. Also the hull weight which is heavier on the Margay than the Sabre FTD is in need of addressing even though it is a shorter and narrower.
Once again a big thank you for information on the Sabre FTD.
On a different note I was at the Columbus, Ohio fishing show (awesome show!) and I met Sherm from Sherm’s marine along with his wife and they had a Pantera Classic with a Caracal as well. Sherm and his wife were awesome folks and I was able to sit behind the wheel of the Pantera Classic and was surprised to find out that my knees were touching the console, this had the hot foot option. I am 6’2″ and was wondering if the Sabre FTD has more knee room?
Thanks in advance for any input.
Thank you so much for your information Midnight Rider!
I want to start by saying that I will be buying a Bass Cat boat and I never had any doubt about the quality of their boats, never. I enjoy the “Mom and Pop” feel even after they were sold, the videos are captivating about the boat making process, especially “From Buckets to Boats”.
I never been behind the wheel of a Sabre FTD only a Pantera Classic at the Columbus Fishing Show and my knees were hitting the console so I need to travel to find a Sabre FTD.
I want to ask nicely about something that still puzzles me, I did watch the vacuum process videos and understand it is superior to other methods and it removes the excess weight of unnecessary resin, but a narrower and shorter Margay is heavier, and I assume they vacuum the transom on that model as well? Also when you move up to the 20 foot models the weights of a Bass Cat are almost identical to Rangers, Tritons, Skeeters, and sometimes a bit heavier and they use the vacuum process as well. I am thinking this a catalog error, Dallas from Bass Cat told me on the phone he was looking into this and other items as well.
Anyhow I want to reiterate that I will get some model of Bass Cat but not sure what model currently.
Thanks and I hope everyone has a great and safe weekend!
A big thank you for all the input. I too use 100% synthetic in my vehicles, I used to have a Dakota V-6 with 130,000 miles years ago that needed intake gaskets and when I took off the manifold and valve covers I was shocked as to how brand new everything looked. I contacted a friend at a boat dealer today and he said Mercury synthetic blend was excellent and was not too sure from going to a blended oil to 100% synthetic oil.
I will say the salesman is really persistent telling me about an Optimax 150 with 1,800 hours with even compression and still going strong and other related stories…:)
I do know regular maintenance is the key but I would like an edge. 😉
Thank you fellow boaters and fishermen!
Great to hear! I respect everyone’s opinion and comments.
I am going to try Amsoil after my Mercury blended oil is gone. I talked to a marina on the Ohio PA border who sells it and he showed me some eye dropping results in regards to lubricity and cleanliness of the internals of the engine.
Also he says if you have an E-tec and use xd100 oil that is a great alternative to Amsoil, except he says their product is cheaper??? (I have a Mercury)
I think we all know that regular maintenance no matter what product we use is the most important, I am looking for a bit of an edge and also like to maintain my engines and keep them at their optimum performance so I will experiment with 100% synthetic oil.
Thanks again everyone.
Hello BassCat fans, I would like to add my two cents in regards to what I’d like to see BassCat change/add/innovate.
First off you should ” spank (correct or encourage) the one you love when something is wrong” I say this because I see some glaring changes that will enhance and update the line up. I am NOT bashing but rather SHOWING and TELLING what fellow anglers say about BassCat boats.
I know Correct Craft (owners of BassCat) and the Pierce family are aware of the winning product they have, output is increasing and I hear they are growing the facility that makes BassCat boats. A lifetime hull warranty that is transferable to several owners speaks highly of the boat and is unheard of among other bass boat manufacturers. I know of several innovations pioneered by BassCat and tell fellow fisherman of them. ” Hey look at this recessed trolling motor”, I then say nicely yep BassCat had that decades earlier…, “this bass boat has a touch pad for boat functions, yep BassCat had that years earlier.”And there are other innovations.
Why and what am I trying to say???
For example here in northern Ohio this weekend we had our “Mosquito Madness” 2-day tournament where the winners walked away with 10 grand. As I was fishing in a cove this weekend I heard a thud and a couple of 4 letter words from a boater’s co angler. Why his anger, he said that twice he stumbled and fell from the raised chrome hinges from the BassCat rear deck.Hmmmm, I saw the owner of the Eyra later in the evening and we dock talked about the tournament and the stumbling co angler, he confessed he hit the deck as did other folks he fished with. Not, I repeat NOT a deal breaker, I KNOW why they do this for the ease of rear deck access for maintenance, A+ idea but they can still achieve this with recessed hinges.
I talked with the tournament staff on Friday about everything fishing and bass boat models came up. Folks it really is Ford, Dodge, Chevy, even Toyota in the world of bass boats. Each fights for their brand, sometimes a bit foolishly. I talked about BassCats firsts, ride, and lifetime hull warranty…
You wanna know what I heard, yes you do. I’m quoting from them, fellow BassCat owners, please don’t give me grief.
“The interior is from the 70’s and 80’s, they are outdated”
“Look at that steering wheel, it’s hideous” (yes I know why BassCat makes it that way)
This is from several anglers, ” Look at the gaskets around those triangular lids, all kinked in the corners and for a 70,000 dollar boat, no thanks, can you imagine the quality of the stuff you can’t see”
“Look how forward the recessed trolling motor is, it is awkward to use” (Sabre model)
“Look at the weird angles of the lids and deck layouts, it looks like a high school project” Not my words I REPEAT again.
I write this because SOME of these comment do hit home with me but you “don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater” (look that up if you haven’t heard that before)
All of this I hope creates dialogue within the owners group AND from the company that makes these awesome boats.
Anyhow these are my two cents, actually with inflation it’s considerably higher… 😉
Thank you to all that add something constructive, bashing other boat brands won’t advance BassCat’s cause.
Hello and a HUGE HUGE HUGE thank you to all the positive feedback.
I am blown away that BassCat would respond, and I say thank you once again. This really is a class act!
I did know that BassCat was expanding because I spoke to a secretary from there who mentioned this some time ago, kudos to all the staff at BassCat.
I do want to say I am going to upgrade to a Caracal hopefully sooner or later, I am currently talking to an out of state dealer, fingers crossed. I saw this boat in person in Columbus at Sherm’s Marine display and he mentioned it truly is a big water boat. I fish Erie, Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, Buffalo harbor, and even the Niagara river and Lake Ontario. The boat is deep and he promised a smooth ride in choppy waters.
I understand why BassCat do what they do,(is that proper English?) the layouts, the electronics, the livewells and it does make sense and I see the method to their madness. To the BassCat staffer or if it was Rick Pierce answering, thanks again for your answers, I am a lifetime customer and “advertiser.” I do have my likes and dislikes with boats, cars, trucks, planes, and even people-lol, I will professionally give kudos and rarely some “tough love” to all mentioned above.
P.S. I rarely do tournaments and the “Mosquito Madness” I mentioned earlier ended yesterday and happily I took home a check, top 15. Check it out on “dobass.com”
Thank you for the pics and information.
Hopefully it will migrate to the Basscat website soon…
Psst, checkout Lake Erie for the walleyes, on fire, and evening largemouth and smallies within the shadows of downtown Cleveland.
