Most of the guys in Colorado, on the western side use a 24 pitch. I have a classic with a 175 opti and am using a 24. may go to a 23.Martin

I bought a 2006 OPTI with a 3year warranty and purchased an additional 3 years. It covers EVERYTHING except the prop, bent shaft, and water pump. But just as in auto warranties you have to have it serviced at the required times as outlined in the owners mannual. Had a “friend” an attorney, review it and he said it is as good as gold. Also had a friend that blew a power head. Merc replaced it at no charge.Martin

Before you buy Optimas check out the Trojan. They are a little cheaper and in my opinion a better battery. I had Optimas and they were good bats, but didnt seem to hold a charge as long as the trojans do. Both of them charge really fast. Much faster that the acid bats. After a day on the water, it takes an hour to 1-1/2 hours to full charge. No fumes and you dont have to worry about water or battery acid. There are other advantages to using them. I wouldnt mix the two different types together, but I really dont know a reason not too. Maybe someone else can jump in and give you more info.Martin

I have found the nasty silicone. It is called Through the Roof.Purchased at a Tru Value hardware. It will seal anything and quickly. So be carefull. Acetone is the only thing that will take it off and even then its tough. Even before it dries. Besides sealing anything you want to, it also acts as an adhesive. Dont get it on your hands and then lean against the fence post. You may be there when the fence is rotted. Also, for hard to get at screws, where you cant get your hands into a tight place, just put a small dab, pinhead size on the blade of the screwdriver, wait a few seconds, and the screw will stay in place until you get it started. Good stuff, but nasty.Martin

Its really a good idea to torque the plugs to mfg specs with a torque wrench. I know some are hard to get too, if you work at it you can get it done.Martin

In the 50s my cousin and I adopted a method of fishing for fresh water. It was refered to as the yankee rig. Because northerns that came to Florida used it in saltwater. Place a weight on the end of the line and the hook about 10″ up with bait. We used a heavy weight becuase the bait casters and nylon line wouldnt get the lure out to the fish. We used this on various Florida lakes and were quite sucessfull with the Creme worm and and a pork rind eel made by Johnson. My best sucess with drop shot (yankee rig), has been to cast to shore and retrieve about 2 ft, shake your rod tip and reel 2 feet. The fish usually hit on the shake. Fish all the way to the boat. Robo 4″ anything in aarons magic or prism have been the best colors for me. Hooked through the nose is also best. Dont jerk to set the hook. When you feel the bite sweep the rod to set the hook. Wacky rig also works on drop shot by hoping the weight 1 to 2 feet off the bottom and letting it drop back down. When fishing is tough or in clear water drop shot is the way to go. Good luck.Martin

Joey, good luck man. I truly do know the feeling. I have observed the bottom side of financial hell so many times that Ive lost count. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Put your head down, lay back your ears, bare your teeth, and get after it. Youll be back.I was out of fishing for a while, due to finances, then bought a used boat, financed a new motor and busted the hull on the boat. Then I found BCB, truly believe it was divine guidance, and everthing has been uphill ever since. You have a lot of “family” on here. Some you have never met and may never meet. So stick around.Martin

A real tradgedy….and I feel for you. Those kinds of things never go away. I know, but in different circumstances. Every one should know in cars or boats; at 60mph 2 seconds equals approx 60 yards. At any age how fast can you react in 2 seconds?Martin

Im sure someone else will jump on here with more advice. The alternator on your motor should be recharging that battery while running. I would check to see if there is an excessive amount of current draw from the accessories. Lights, pumps, etc when the motor is not running. How much of a load are you putting on the battery when the big motor is not running. Could be a bad alternator.Martin
