Bullet is a feather-light hull. You can put them, allisons, and strokers together in the same category. They only qualify as bass boats because of decks w/ limited storage and pedestal seats. Yes – they will have trollers – but the fishability is very lacking. They are racing hulls and to perform comes with many compromises youll soon miss. What you have now will outrun 95% of the mainstream tournament boats on the water – get your speed rush outrunning them. Last year – Jan 1, 08, we lost a local angler in the Arkansas River. It was a decent day to be out – low 40s, river had around a 1 chop. Frank had just put a new motor on his Allison and was out making speed runs by witness reports. Story has it that he must have hooked the hull around 80 coming out of the throttle too quick. He wasnt wearing his PFD or kill switch. They found the boat running and beached on a sand bar. He was an extremely good and experienced driver and was well respected for his setup skills. Frank floated up about 5 months later and was found. My neighbor who ran a Bullet w/ Simon motor sold his rig and bought a Puma. He says 80+ is fast enough – likes the new boat much better. Speed is a rush you never get enough of. No matter how good a driver you are – some of these boats will exceed anyones abilities to control. Stick with the Cougar.
I had the pleasure to meet Mike at the OI. He was a great guy to visit with, very down to earth, and extremely approachable. My son visited with him and he snapped a picture with my wife. My best friend read his book and told me a year ago that that is a role hes playing for BASS. I really wonder how much that BASS is wanting to create personalities. How about Ish Monroe with a deep voice hollering- “Come and get you some of this” – then see him on Yo Ish and wonder if theyre two different people. I see the yelling and antics as an act or personna that he puts on for the camera. I cant stand his hijinks on camera, but I know that person is not the one my family met and likes. I wonder how responsible BASS is for these personas in an attempt to create personalities and build the sport. Im no fan of the personna – but how about Rumbanis and KVD almost going to fists at Lake Dardanelle over the same fishing hole. How about all of Aaron Martens whining and fussing with the locals over a fishing area. There are a couple of shows a year with him whining. How about Aaron and Byron Velvic fighting over the same fishing location last year. Skeet Reese used to be the king of arrogant – but now hes every mans man. These guys are fishermen- just like you and me- with better fishing instincts. Theyre not actors. Fishing is not very entertaining to watch. Why do they act like they do. Who is coaching them behind the scenes?
Mine usually runs around 5500-5650. My prop has bad tip cup and I need to have it worked. I should be able to raise it some after working and get higher rpms.
I hit low 60s loaded in my 08 Sabre w/ 150 efi. Im turning a 24 Tempest Sounds like you need to take the folks that sold you the boat for them to run.
You can use a “magic eraser” or ajax with a scotchbrite pad. I normally just use the ajax and when the handles dry – they look brand new. Ive heard about the bleach pulling oils out of the cork – but personally, I dont think cleaning the handles once a year or so is enough to do much damage.
I hope he can move up in AOY and get into the classic as well as win rookie of the year! This would be a great accomplishment. Hes a great person and I wish him all the best.
I have an 08 Sabre that I added the flippin deck to. Our floorplans are virtually identical. You will find that the additional acreage on the front deck is great. It will fish like a much bigger boat. It also leaves a great space underneath for your partner to put their tackle bag out of the way. Ive suggested to people to get the deck but be aware of the downsides. There are two cons to adding the deck. 1. You will lose the functionality of the step cooler. Regardless of the access door they put on the deck – you wont use the step cooler anymore. Holding two lids up to put in ice & such is a pain in the arse. I slide a small ice chest under the deck. 2. Get ready for a big step up onto the deck. The little cooler/step will no longer be useful and youll have one heck of a step up and down. If you have young knees – not a problem. The big step can get to be a chore by the end of the day.
I wouldnt run the old oil. I have the 150 efi as well – my Merc master tech told me to never run anything but premium plus. If you have an Academy or Gander Mountain nearby – you should be able to buy it (Quicksilver) at $18 per gallon. Motors are too expensive to take chances on the oil.
I got a Shimano “Baraja” monster tackle binder w/ 20 extra ziplock sleeves and replaced the original small snap lock rings with big heavy duty 4″ snap lock rings I got from a hardware store. Im able to organize about 75 – 100 bags of soft plastics and find whatever I want to use in only a couple of seconds. Its also easier to just grab the bag when Im gathering tackle to go fishing out of a friends boat.
I bought the second console on my Sabre for my wife & son. Ive found out my fishing partners prefer to have it there as well – especially in wet or cold weather. I like the small stuff storage in the glove box and have my stereo mounted inside so its out of sight and the weather. Although my rod tips are past the passenger console and extend to the outside – I really dont have a problem with this. I did add the optional flippin deck and love the extra space. It made the cooler space essentially worthless – but I use it for dry storage and carry a flat-topped cooler under the deck for drinks & snacks. Its also good for co-angler to slide tackle bag underneath.
The Citgo station on Broadway in NLR between Wendys and Popeyes by the interstate is pure gas. They say they wont buy ethanol gas – clogs their filters up bad and theyre having to replace them all the time.
I dont like the idea of buying from Chavez either – but the owners of the station wont let the distributor put E10 in their storage tanks. I know that Merc says it doesnt make any difference in HP output – but I dont think my motor runs as strong with blended fuel and I dont know where else to buy the pure stuff.
I had the same problem and found out it was the fluid level. Leveled out the cells in both batteries and hooked them up to a manual charger that pulls it thru a conditioning cycle to eliminate sulfation. To clean up the plates takes at least 10amps to each battery. Theyre performing like new – and I make sure I check the fluid level every month now.
I have a Merc Tempest 24p on my 07 Sabre w/ 150efi and am happy with the performance for the most part. I typically see a consistent 63 by myself and 60 with a partner – rpms around 5700. My question to BCB – Is there a prop to pad or other engine height measurement that you have found to be optimal.Last edited by jstew on December 2nd, 2009, 8:51 pm, edited 1 time in total.
You need to get a gps. They may be small – but theyre heavy suckers- theyll slow a boat down 5-7mph every time. At 0% slip – youre doing 63. At 8% – youre doing 58. Ive wondered how the trophys do on our Sabres. I see them alot on the Panteras and up – but never on a Sabre. I know they like high plate settings. How is your water pressure running at that height? When I get much over 1/8th inch above flush I can easily overtrim and loose pressure in turns. I have to really trim to my WP gauge. When I first got my Sabre – I was getting 63 gps with a partner right after break-in. Now, with about 60-80 hours on the powerhead it peaks out at 60 with a partner. The rpms are essentially the same – so the difference has to be slip. The prop is in perfect shape thanks to a trip to Mark Croxtons shop. Ive fiddled with the plate and cant seem to get it back to the original “sweet spot” and was wondering if theres a setting where they typically set them from the factory.
